In early July 2019, SOILCO Pty Ltd was awarded the contract by the Tweed Shire Council to design, construct and operate a state-of-the-art Organic Recycling Facility (ORF) for the Northern Rivers Region.

Much like other progressive regions, the Tweed Shire Council’s long-term pursuit of a ‘zero waste’ goal resonates with SOILCO and their operations currently servicing the Illawarra and South Coast of NSW. SOILCOs proven processes and technologies have been included in their successful proposal to construct a modular food and garden waste recycling facility for Tweed Shire Council at Stotts Creek.

In collaboration with the Tweed Shire Council and the NSW Government, SOILCO will construct the ORF at the Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre. Once complete it will enable the Northern Rivers to process its own food and garden waste materials locally, providing quality assured compost products for the local community.

Mayor of Tweed, Cr Katie Milne thanked the NSW Government for its financial contribution to the organics recycling facility, which, she said, “is part of Council’s long term ‘zero waste’ commitment.”

This facility will continue the great work the Tweed Shire Council has started, with the introduction of the food and garden bins that “has reduced waste to landfill by approximately 20 per cent”. Cr Milne added, “we used to recover 42 per cent and now we recover 60 per cent due to the green bin waste getting turned into compost.

The Northern Rivers Council has confirmed it is part of the “Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre Masterplan, which plans for waste management for the next 50 years – a $40 million investment in responsibly minimising and managing our waste”.

It is not only the environment that will benefit, with the Mayor adding, “it’s great to hear a number of jobs will be created during construction as well as two new full-time jobs to operate the facility and other indirect jobs through distribution, which will be a welcome boost for the Tweed”.

The organics recycling facility will be the largest of its kind in the Northern Rivers and will be designed to process nearly 25,000 tonnes per annum of the food and garden waste, turning it into high-quality compost for reuse.

Set to be operational by the middle of 2021, the Tweed Shire Council project will create pathways for a sustainable future, but importantly also inject economical benefits into the local economy along with employment opportunities.
