Poor drainage is one of the most common problems in high use sportsfields. Excess water on the ground surface causes slippery, unsafe conditions and can lead to accelerated deterioration of the turf and compaction of the field.
Sand based mixes are chosen for drainage characteristics and resistance to compaction. The down side is that they have a low ability to retain water and nutrients so added fertilisers are likely to leach away.
To compensate, coarse textured soils have added organic matter in the form of compost. The addition of compost improves water holding and nutrient retention. This provides turf a balanced growing media which increases vigour and resilience.
