Summer in the Garden

One of the most beneficial activities you can do in your garden before summer is mulch. Mulching gives a protective covering to your soil and provides the following benefits:

• Cuts evaporation by up to 50% thereby reducing the need to water.
• Suppresses weeds and helps prevent weed germination saving time and herbicide use.
• Moderates soil temperature to minimise plant stress.
• Prevents erosion and soil crusting - maximising water absorption.

As mulch breaks down it improves soil structure by adding organic matter and encouraging microbiological activity. It also serves to beautify the garden, providing a contrast to foliage and flowers.

To calculate the mulch that is required it is best to measure up the garden area. The minimum recommended application rate is 50mm deep.

So 1m3 of mulch will cover an area of 20m2.
